The Number to call the police is 110
If you are worried about your Japanese, seek help from someone nearby who can understand Japanese.

When you call 110, the dispatcher of the center will ask you the questions below.

  1. Tell them whether it’s an Incident or an accident
    Dispatcher:「事件ですか、事故ですか。何がありましたか」 (Jiko desuka, jiken desuka? Nani ga arimashita ka?)
    EN: “Incident or accident? What happened?”
    You:「ひき逃げ事故です」 (Hikinige jiko desu.)
    EN:” It’s a hit-and-run accident.”
  • Be clear whether it’s an incident or an accident.
  1. Tell them when it happened
    Dispatcher:「それはいつですか」 (Sore wa itsudesuka?)
    EN: ”When did it happen?”
    You:「ついさっきです」 (Tsui sakki desu.)
    EN: ”Just a moment ago.”
  1. Tell the location
    Dispatcher:「場所はどこですか」 (Basho wa doko desuka?)
    EN:” Where is the location?”
    You:「○○市□□町の△△公園の前にある交差点です」 (○○shi □□chou/machi no△△kouen no mae ni aru kousaten desu.) 
  • Be sure to tell the name of the city. If you don’t know the address, tell the nearest tall building, intersection, or landmark.
  • The management number on a telephone pole, the control number of a traffic light, the management number on a sign, and the address displayed on a vending machine (soft drinks) can be used to tell the address. If you don’t know the address, try to find these nearby.
  1. Tell the situation
    Dispatcher:「どのような状況でしたか」 (Dono youna jyoukyou deshitaka?)
    EN: “What was the situation like?”
    You:「自動車が自転車にぶつかって、そのまま逃げていきました。自転車に乗っていた高校生は脚をけがしているようです。」 (Jidousha ga jitensha ni butukatte, sonomama nigete ikimashita. Jitensha ni note ita 
    EN:” A car hit a bicycle and fled. The high school student who was on the bicycle seems to have an injured leg.”
  • Tell the state of an incident/accident and the magnitude of the damage.
  • If there are injured people or fire caused by an accident, always tell them about it.
  1. About the suspect
    Dispatcher:「逃げた自動車はどんな車でしたか」 (Nigeta jidousha
    waDonna kuruma deshitaka?)
    EN: “What was the fleeing vehicle like?”
    You:「白色の軽自動車でした。◇◇方向に走っていきました。ナンバープレートの番号は見えませんでしたが、✖✖ナンバーだったと思います。」 (Shiro iro no kei jidousha deshita. ◇◇houkou ni hasshite ikimashita. Nambar pureto no bangou wa miremasen deshitaga, 、✖✖nambar datta to omoimasu.”
    EN:” It was a white mini. It drove away in the direction of ◇◇. I couldn’t see the license plate, but I think it was ✖✖.”
  • Tell what you know about the number of suspects, facial features, clothing, and direction which they fled.
  1. Tell your name and contact information
    Dispatcher:あなたの名前と連絡先を教えてください。(Anata no namae to renraku saki wo oshiete kudasai.) 
    EN: “Tell me your name and contact information.”
    You:私の名前は○○○○です。電話番号は・・・・です。(Watashi no namae wa ○○○○. Denwa bango ha…..desu.)
    EN: ”My name is ○○○○. My number is ….”
  • Tell your information such as your relation with reported incident/accident, your address, and your name. 
  • Provide a phone number that you can be reached at, such a mobile phone number. Please do not turn off the power even after the report is over, you may be asked for direction to the location.

■Green public telephone

  1. Lift the receiver
  2. Press the “Emergency Call Button”
  3. Dial 110

■Gray public telephone or card-type public telephone

  1. Lift the receiver
  2. Dial 110
  • In the case of 110 calls, charges, telephone card, IC digital card is not needed.

■Pink public telephone
